Discrimination At Work Place
"No change can come if those who are impacted the most by discrimination are not willing to stand up for themselves."
Zainab Salbi
Discrimination
Discrimination is defined as “the unjust or prejudicial treatment of various categories of individuals or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.” (Oxford Dictionary) Workplace discrimination deals with issues like religion, race, gender, disability, age, and sexual orientation.
Its never ethical at all to discriminate any employee on the basis of their colors, sex and religion , however, In India discrimination against people on the basis of ethnicity, racial or cultural orientation is strictly forbidden under the state laws in all sectors, including the Government as well as employment sector.
What is workplace discrimination?
Discrimination occurs when someone is treated unfavorably due to a particular attribute.
Discrimination involve some of the following conditions:-
1. Conduct which will be considered harassing, coercive, bullying or disruptive, including sexual harassment.
2. Making offensive ‘jokes’ about another worker’s group, ethnic background or allegiance, color, sex or disability.
3. Expressing negative stereotypes about particular groups e.g. “married women shouldn’t
be working.”
4. Judging someone on their political or religious beliefs instead of their work
performance.
5. Using selection processes supported irrelevant attributes like ethnic or clan group,
age, sex or disability instead of on knowledge, skills and merit.
As per the survey of ‘Bias@Workplace’ states that, Five out of ten employees in India Inc have experienced one or the kind of discrimination, said a study by staffing firm TeamLease Services. The survey pointed that while gender, age and qualification based biases existed in companies, discrimination supported caste and religion became almost obsolete. Discrimination at workplace supported qualification goes as high as 50%.
Another revelation of the survey showed that a better percentages (54%) of younger generation between 21 to 35 years are reported to possess experienced discrimination as compared to employees above 50 years.
The TeamLease study further stated that pregnant women or women with young children are faced a relative disadvantage, both during the recruitment process also as seeing for opportunities at the workplace. "While the share for this is often not high, it's only desirable that the discrimination is totally abolished from the system. The study also goes on to mention that, although not significantly, but attractiveness are considered another advantage in some metros like Pune and Mumbai," the report said.
A few days back I found a piece of news that stated that the Delta Air Lines fined $50,000 for discriminating against Muslim passengers, I went to the well-know super market VMart where I found 80% male employees. They were doing unethical practices. when I asked an employee why there are fewer females they gave me the answer that the company believes in the male employees because they are fast, responsible and strong. This type of environment is there in our country where we discriminate against people based on sex, religion, and culture. People don't like to sit with low caste people even in the workplace which is a very embracing thing to know about the environment.
Many companies are very much ethical towards their environment and their policies, If someone found doing discrimination then the company will fire her/him or file a case or put a fine on him/her which is correct every company, as well as everyone, make environment ethical so that the there is no discrimination and bias among the employees and at the workplace.
I have written this Blog just to put my thoughts that I have seen in the big companies, Not all companies but some of the companies who do unethical practices 'discrimination' among the employees based on racism, culture, caste, ethnic background and gender.
If you enjoyed this blog, I’d be very grateful if you’d help it spread by sending it to a friend, or sharing it on Twitter or Facebook and Instagram. And Do Comments.
